Memorandum Signing Between AUDA-NEPAD and Meta: Paving the way for Digital Transformation in Africa

As the African Union (AU) continues to chart its course towards harnessing the potential of digitalisation across the continent, a significant milestone has been achieved through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between AUDA-NEPAD and Meta.

The MoU signed by CEO of AUDA-NEPAD, H.E Ms Nardos Bekele-Thomas and Sir Nicholas Clegg, President of Global Affairs, Meta aims to support the implementation of the African Union Digital Strategy, the African Union Data Governance Strategy, the African Union Artificial Intelligence Roadmap, and Meta's Data for Good initiative. Through this cooperation, both parties are committed to driving positive change and fostering a clean information society transition across Africa.

Against the backdrop of the AU's strategic efforts, including the formulation of an AI Strategy and the recent release of a white paper outlining the AU Artificial Intelligence Roadmap, this MoU signifies a pivotal step towards operationalizing these initiatives. AUDA-NEPAD, serving as the operational arm of the AU within the AI Technical Working Group (TWG), plays a crucial role in harmonizing the AI strategy within the broader digitalization framework.

Meanwhile, Meta's Data For Good initiative stands as a beacon of innovation, leveraging AI to address pressing social challenges across Africa. Through initiatives such as High-Resolution Population Density Maps, Electrical Distribution Grid Maps, Relative Wealth Index, and the Segment Anything Model (SAM), Meta has demonstrated a commitment to using technology for social good.

The collaboration between AUDA-NEPAD and Meta aims to advance digitalization in Africa on multiple fronts. By focusing on enhancing digital infrastructure, promoting data governance, and leveraging AI for development, the partnership aligns with key AU strategies and Meta's Data for Good initiative.

Addressing the media immediately after the signing, the CEO of AUDA-NEPAD indicated that despite much progress, Africa's digital landscape continues to lag the continent’s needs and aspirations. “Underdeveloped digital infrastructure coupled with limited, and in some instances unaffordable internet access, hinder our collective growth. However, instead of focusing on gaps and challenges, I would rather focus on presenting Africa as the land of digital opportunities”, she said.

On the signing of the MoU, the CEO highlighted that the partnership is not just about technology; but it's also about empowering Africa to seize the digital age and build a brighter future for all her citizens. “It aligns with AUDA-NEPAD objectives of promoting digital skills development, innovation, and infrastructure expansion”, she said.

The signing of the MOU heralds a new era of collaboration, innovation, and progress in African regional and continental digital and AI development. As the continent continues its journey towards a digital future, the partnership between AUDA-NEPAD and Meta stands as a testament to the transformative power of technology in driving sustainable development and improving the lives of millions.

Through this MoU with the AUDA-NEPAD, we're excited to provide Meta's expertise in advancing digitalization and infrastructure across the African continent. Our goal is to promote data governance, harness the power of data and artificial intelligence (AI) for sustainable development, and enhance digital literacy and technical skills among African youth”, said Sir Nicholas Clegg.
