Empowering African Women and Combating Gender-Based Violence: AUDA-NEPAD’s Initiatives on International Women’s Day

On March 8, 2024, AUDA-NEPAD commemorated International Women’s Day with a series of events aimed at honouring women’s achievements and addressing critical issues affecting them across Africa. The commemoration served as a platform for appreciation, dialogue, and reflection on the indispensable role of women in the continent’s development.

Acknowledging Women’s Contributions

Central to the celebration was the recognition of the invaluable contributions made by women within AUDA-NEPAD and beyond. The agency’s Youth, Gender and Women’s Empowerment Unit took the opportunity to express gratitude by presenting each woman with symbolic gifts in appreciation of their excellence and professionalism in the workplace.

Advancing Gender Equality

The event facilitated discussions on pressing issues concerning the empowerment and progression of African women, emphasising the collaborative efforts needed to promote gender equality and women’s rights. Themes such as women’s development, investment in their potential, and career guidance were explored through these discussions. Participants highlighted the necessity for increased investment in women’s development programs to ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities across all sectors.

Partnership Against Gender-Based Violence

In alignment with the International Women’s Day theme of “Invest in women: Accelerate progress,” AUDA-NEPAD collaborated with Sonke Gender Justice to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and promote women’s economic empowerment. The collaboration involved visits to various initiatives aimed at addressing GBV and empowering survivors.

Community Engagement and Support

Visits to the Diepkloof Welfare Centre and JOZI FM showcased the importance of community engagement and media platforms in advancing gender equality and social justice. The discussions revolved around strategies to empower survivors, provide educational opportunities, and advocate for legal reforms to protect women’s rights.

Inspiring Stories of Resilience

The journey culminated at a community hall, where representatives from Masiphephe Network shared inspiring stories of resilience and empowerment. The network focuses on reducing vulnerability to GBV and empowering survivors, predominantly women, to break free from abusive situations. Through holistic approaches, survivors have embarked on journeys of healing, often starting businesses, or pursuing education to secure a better future.

Commitment to Gender Equality

AUDA-NEPAD reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment through policies, programs, and partnerships. By nurturing inclusivity and collaboration, the agency aims to create an environment where women can flourish and contribute meaningfully to Africa’s development agenda.
