This paper provides a comprehensive review of impact oriented methodology (IOM), which is a newly developed monitoring and evaluation tool to support the Directorate General for Research and Innovation (DG Research and Innovation) of the European Commission (EC) in their task of monitoring research projects in the area of international public health. A description of the four IOM methodology tools used to track, identify, document, assess results and draw impacts from research projects is given. Appropriate data management systems are noted as recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the IOM methodology for project participants.
