African Member States and Regional Economic Communities report on the progress of Agenda 2063 First Ten-Year Implementation Plan

 November 5 - 7 2019, Nairobi, Kenya

The African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) have developed an empirical methodology that will guide national, regional and continental African Union (AU) bodies to track and report on the implementation of Agenda 2063. Subsequently, and in line with the mandate of AUDA-NEPAD, a continental workshop was organised for the AU Member States and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) to prepare their progress reports on the implementation of Agenda 2063.

Ambassador Abdoulaye Diop, Chief of Staff of the Chairperson of the AUC, delivered the opening remarks on behalf of H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission. The workshop was co-chaired by Mr. Mesfin Tessema, and Mr.Talla Kebe, respectively Directors at AUC and AUDA-NEPAD.

The workshop drew participation from senior government officials from forty (40) AU Member States, namely: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Chad, Central Africa Republic, Comoros, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In addition, the continental platform had representation from six (6) RECs, namely: the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), East African Community (EAC), Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) and the Economic Community for Central African States (ECCAS). Representatives from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Africa Capacity Building Foundation, African Peer Review Mechanism, African Development Bank, and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, attended the workshop.

The practical and hands-on sessions during the workshop provided Member States and RECs with the opportunity to apply the tools and templates to analyse country data, and to report on the progress of implementation of Agenda 2063 in connection with their national development plans.

The Ambassadorial Committee on Agenda 2063, chaired by His Excellency, Ambassador Zenene Sinombe, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Botswana to the African Union, received a debriefing on the support that AUDA-NEPAD and AUC are providing to the Member States and RECs in preparing progress reports on the implementation of Agenda 2063. The debriefing, attended by Ambassadors to the African Union of Botswana, Rwanda and South Sudan, together with official representatives from the embassies of Libya, Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire, commended AUDA-NEPAD and AUC, and called for enhanced synergies and peer-learning among Member States for accelerated implementation of Agenda 2063.

Member States and RECs will complete, validate and submit their reports to the African Union. These reports, including a performance dashboard, will be presented at a High-Level Forum on Agenda 2063 that will take place during the African Union Summit, in February 2020, in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia. Furthermore, AUDA-NEPAD and AUC will compile a continental-level report which will be presented to the AU Assembly in February 2020 by H.E. Mr. Alassane Dramane Ouattara, President of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire, Leader on the Follow-Up of the Implementation of African Union Agenda 2063.
