Initiative for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa (IFNA)

IFNA was launched jointly by the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Kenya in August 2016 during the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI) as a ten-year initiative until 2025.

IFNA’s aim is to accelerate the implementation of food and nutrition security policies on the ground. It is with a view to contributing to a comprehensive improvement in the nutrition status of the African continent in line with 2014 Malabo Declaration of the African Union; Goal 2 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Agenda established by the United Nations; and UN Decade of Action on Nutrition which began in 2016.

IFNA is managed by 10 steering committee member organizations (AfDB, FAO, IFAD, JICA, JIRCAS, NEPAD, UNICEF, WFP, WHO and World Bank) and IFNA Secretariat is running the Initiative on their behalf. Currently IFNA has 10 initial participating countries (Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique Nigeria, Senegal and Sudan) and it plays a role as a catalyst to create synergy among stakeholders in each country.

As characteristics, IFNA focuses on:

  • Integration of the agriculture sector into nutrition interventions,
  • making the best use of existing good practices, and
  • Strengthening the capacity at the local level in order to enhance sustainability and inclusiveness of the nutritional improvement in accordance with the country context.
