The African Union Commission Chairperson, H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat led a delegation to Beijing, China, accompanied by the NEPAD Agency CEO Dr Ibrahim Assane Mayaki. The Chairperson was received by H.E Mr Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs in China.
The two-day compacted working visit focussed on five strategic dialogue areas between the AUC and China. The main areas of discussion were on:
i) Capacity building of the AUC;
ii) Regional infrastructure (Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa - PIDA);
iii) Peace and security;
iv) Public health and disease control; and
v) Tourism and aviation.
Following the strategic discussions, a media briefing was held. Later in the day, meetings were held with the Chinese Minister of Health. The first day of the working visit ended with a meeting between the Chairperson and the Africa Diplomatic Corp in Beijing, where he briefed them on the outcomes of the 30th AU Assembly. In his briefing, H.E Mahamat highlighted the launch of the Single African Air Transport Market; progress made on the Continental Free Trade Area, as well as progress on the African Union reform agenda.
In all the meetings held, the pivotal role of NEPAD in contributing to the work of the African Union was well articulated. H.E Mahamat echoed the importance of regional infrastructure as a conduit that will integrate Africa.
The second day of the delegation in China will see working visits to the Chinese Centre for Disease Control, Huawei Beijing Executive Centre and meetings with the State Council of the Peoples Republic of China, H.E Mr Wang Yong.
It is important to note that this is the first official visit of H,E Faki Mahamat to China, in his capacity as AUC Chairperson.
