“The NEPAD Agency now has a footprint in 52 of the 55 African Union Member States,” Dr Ibrahim Mayaki, CEO of the NEPAD Agency, informed the media during a briefing at the 30th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
NEPAD Agency has adopted a results-based approach and aligned its interventions to the First Ten Year Implementation Plan of Agenda 2063, African Union’s long-term vision and strategic framework for socio-economic transformation of the continent.
In response to questions from the media, Dr Mayaki explained that NEPAD Agency works with regional economic communities in implementing its various programmes on the continent, as well as building capacity for greater transformation.
Dr Mayaki informed the media that NEPAD Agency’s new strategic plan (which will be implemented from 2018 to 2023), will see implementation of its programmes through the corridor approach, in order to trigger regional integration and augment economic development.
One of the greatest challenges on the continent is to create the much needed jobs for youths. It is for this reason that the NEPAD Agency focusses on technical vocational education and training, as well as the promotion of policy and capacity development interventions, such as support towards the development of National Action Plans on youth employment and skills development, enhancing the employability and entrepreneurial activity for young people.
Media were also informed that since development challenges cut across many sectors, they cannot be clearly compartmentalised. It is for this reason that the NEPAD Agency’s work in Africa takes a multi-sectoral approach in working towards transformation.
During the briefing, Dr Mayaki also urged the media to collaborate more with the NEPAD Agency, who agreed that increased cooperation in the area of communication and advocacy will go a long way in highlighting the work and impact of the organisation on the continent. Such collaborative efforts are even more critical now, at a time when reforms are underway in the African Union, which will see the positioning of NEPAD as the development agency for the continent, in order to bring about greater execution and delivery of results for transformation.
